In her words: Set in the Marvel Universe, this novel introduces Ricochet, a new student to the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters.

In Part One, Ricochet is asked to join Generation X by Professor X himself, shortly after issue 9 of the comic series. Ricochet falls for Jono, becomes fast friends with Monet, loathes Paige and Jubilee with a passion, and discovers that Angelo knows her from her life on the streets of Los Angeles, before joining the group. She is torn between Jono and Angelo, and afraid to show too much affection to either of them for fear of losing them both. When she is attacked by Sentinels and members of a gang of mutants from L.A., she is afraid of endangering the other students at the school, and when her old friends get in touch with her, she goes back to L.A. to find her brother.

Part Two deals with Ricochet's past and her life in L.A., which she must come to terms with when the brother she doesn't remember suddenly shows up as a Nightmare of an enemy, terrorizing her former friends and members of an all-girls gang called the "Wyld Grrls." This section introduces a lot of mutants that Marvel would never put in their books, and may be offensive to some (some foul language but nothing past a PG-13 rating, some adult situations but nothing steamy, and some ideas that might make some uncomfortable). Ricochet must deal with these issues as she finds her brother, and then deal with him.

Part Three is Ricochet's return to the school and what happens when she comes home to find that the place she left isn't the same place now. She must decide if it's still the place for her.
