And the Songbirds are Singing
(part 5 in the Songbird Saga)
by Jenni
SUMMARY: Well, she lived through training, and she lived through her
first class. Now her and the other Gen X kids get the day off in
Boston. It has some drug use/other nasty stuff implied in it, but
nothing bad happens to any of the characters. Still, a PG13 rating.
Just letting you all know ahead of time.
DISCLAIMER: I don't own Gen. X, the good people at Marvel do. I do own
Songbird (Marie) though. Yay! I finally get to say I own a character :)
Also, this story is PG13. Drugs are bad and evil and no one should even
think about trying them.

"K, so what does everyone wanna do?" Angelo was sprawled across the
back of the hummer. Monet was driving through the garage looking for
the ideal spot.
"Well, I want to check out this one comic store..." Everett started.
"Cool! That way I can check for the new Batman comic!" Lee started
jumping up and down. "I hope they sell candy there!"
I rolled my eyes and went back to watching the other people in the
garage.
"I need to stop at Saks and at Marshal Fields." Just like Monet. Has
to go to the most expensive store.
"Ah wanna check out that Stigmata movie. Wanna go with me Ange?" Paige
wanting to see a horror flick? Guess she must really wanna do something
with Angelo today.
"What bout you Marie?" Everett is looking at me. It's really none of
their business what I decide to do, but I should at least humor them.
"I'm gonna stop at Camelot music, then maybe go to a club for a while,"
Its not a total lie. I am gonna go to a club later.
"Hey Sparky, wanna go to the comic store and Kay-Bee toys with Ev and
me?"
"Wait a minute, since when are we going to a toy store Lee?"
"Since I said so. Well Sparky?"
He kept looking straight ahead at nothing. ~Nah, not fer me. I figger
that it would be best if I jus went with Marie t'the CD store.~
I snapped my head back and looked at him. Great, now I'm stuck. I have
to go to the CD store now. Why me. All I wanted to do was go and do
what my choir friends and I used to when we had a day off. And now I
can't.
"Ah, look, right near the elevators." Monet pulled in, with a satisfied
smirk on her face.
"All right, Ah say we all meet in front of, well, Marie what club are
you gonna go to?" Paige looked at her watch, then at me.
"Well, there's this teen/young adult club. I think its called The
Rave." Well, even though they know where it is, it doesn't mean they'll
try and find me in there or look for me.
"K, so we'll meet in front of there at 7, that good for y'all?"
We all nod, then get out. Paige and Angelo walk off arm in arm. Monet
actually flew out and down towards the store. Jubilee dragged Ev over
to the elevators. Jonothon walked over to me.
~Shall we?~
I nod, and we walk over to the second set of elevators and go down.
Why did he have to come with. How am I gonna get rid of him. I can't
do this if he comes. He could tell EVERYONE! Well, like I actually care
what they think. I don't need their approval. As we walk out onto the
street, I stop and stand in front of Jonothon.
"K, listen. I'm not goin to the music store..." I trail off. Should I
actually tell him what I'm gonna do? He probably would be the one
person who would understand, but still. "I have something I need to
do."
~Don't think so gel.~ He looked at me right in the eyes. This is so
strange. He usually never looks people in the eyes. Almost kinda scary.
~See, I don't trust the way yer actin now luv. Best not t'chance
anything happening.~
I back away. "Are you implying that I am a drug addict?"
~Listen. I'm not sayin anything. I jus think it would be better if I
stayed with you and made sure you don't do anything you may regret.~
He stepped forward and tried to grab my shoulders.
"No, I know exactly what you're saying! And I don't have to hear it."
I run away. This is strange. I usually never run from anything. And I
actually lashed out at Jonothon. Well, after I do what I came here for,
everything will be alright.
---------------
~I shouldn't 'ave yelled at 'er. If she is on something, then it would
be 'ard fer 'er t'admit it.~ Thought Jonothon as he ran behind Marie.
~Funny, I didn't remember 'er being this fast in trainin yesterday.~
He watched as she started to turn her head to look and see if he was
trailing her. He ducked into the nearest store.
"Hey Sparky! Thought you were goin with Marie." Jubilee stood next to
him, holding a pack of trading cards and a magazine.
~Umm, I'll talk bout it later.~
Everett popped up. "Something wrong?"
Jonothon, not wanting to alarm Jubilee, told Everett over mindspeak
what had happened with Marie. He was also shocked when Everett just
nodded after hearing the news.
"Yeah, I guess that could happen. She was from a Chicago high school,
and we've all heard the horror stories about what goes on there. I
guess it could been a lot worse. I'll let the others know what's going
on."
"What are you talking about! Are you two hiding something from me?
Tell me! Is it about Marie? Y'know she's my friend too." Jubilee
started pouting. Everett patted her on the shoulder.
"I'll tell you later Lee. We're not sure about anything yet." ~You
don't think that there's a chance she could be pregnant, do you Jono?~
Everett added in private.
The idea suddenly struck Jonothon. ~I don't know mate, 'ope she isn't
though. I gorra go.~ Jonothon looked out, and saw that Marie had sat
down to rest and was just starting to get up and start walking again.
He went out, and started following her at a safe distance. He
remembered back to right before she ran off. It almost seemed like she
wanted to tell him what she was doing. He remembered back to when he
was human. Back then he had experimented, and had remembered how
dangerous, and addicting, drugs could be. He had stopped, not because
of losing his face, but because he hated the powerless feeling. He
just hated everything about it.
He saw Marie dart into an alley, noticing that it was right outside the
club she had mentioned. The Rave. He ran in.
"Did you honestly think that I wouldn't know you were following me?"
---------------
I looked Jonothon up and down. He was actually surprised. And I thought
he was supposed to be a telepath.
"Well?"
He looked down at his shoes, then looked up at me. ~I jus wanted t'make
sure you weren't...~
I sighed. I really was being too rough on him. Maybe it would be best
I just spilled it all now. "Listen, I've been a little hasty, but I
just wanted to do something that didn't involve six other people
tagging along. I'm not doing drugs, or anything else like that." I
raised my head at an angle and smiled. "I'm a good girl. I just was
gonna do something that my friends from choir and I used to do. And,
well, I knew that if everyone heard what I was gonna do... they would
have come and I don't know if I would want them here."
Jonothon looked at me with a puzzled expression. Well, it looked
puzzled. ~So wot are you doin?~
"If I tell you, you promise not to tell the others?"
He nodded.
"Fine then..."
---------------
"So what're we doing here Sparky?" Jubilee popped a bubble and sat down
at a table in the dimly lit club.
~You'll all see soon enough. Just don't tell 'er I told all of you to
come and wait in 'ere.~
As the music started, Everett, Monet, and Paige sat down. Angelo lit a
cigarette and Jonothon leaned against the back wall.
"Is that Marie?" asked Paige as Marie walked to the center of the
stage. Marie took the mike off the stand and started to sing.
