Emma Frost, AKA White Queen, has been quite a surprise to see as the headmistress of the Massachusetts Academy. Her record through life has been spotty at best. Perhaps it all started by her being a middle child to a wealthy yet uncaring family. This is uncertain but her main problems definitely are due to her developing psi-powers that she could not contain. Emma Frost has not currently had her age listed to date. A woman, especially a strict one as Emma, does not reveal many secrets. She is in possibly in her late twenties with a younger sister, 17 year old Cordelia, and an older sister named Adrienne. Emma does not get along well with her sisters and now that Adrienne has become a headmaster of the Acadamy along side her, things are not bound to go over well. It is not a surprise that Emma hasn't mentioned her family more until she is pressed to reveal it. Her vicious, strict, wary demeanor due to her upbringing even brings her to keep herself away from her own family, or more likely, what's left of it.

Emma Frost did live in a wealthy family, but she was not happy. Not much attention was paid to her until she reached her teenage years. It was around then that her parents began to think she was mentally disturbed. After all, what would you think if your daughter was developing numbing headaches and heard "voices" in her head constantly? After many appointments with doctors, psychiatrists and the like failed, her parents decided she needed to be taken care of and placed her in an asylum. She was angry with her parents and living the constant abuse of the personnel of the asylum only made her anger worse. It was not until she came to the conclusion that she was hearing other people's thoughts from their heads did she begin to make sense of her powers. While in the asylum she questioned herself, "If I could hear their thoughts, maybe I can get them to hear mine." She psi-whispered a plea to her guard to "take me...out of .....here" Her plea did not go unnoticed as the facility, and people who got in her way, were beaten by the guard carrying her out. She was one of the survivors to walk away as the asylum burned to the ground and she has never looked back to that day or had to ask another person for anything.

Emma has since well developed her powers but unfortunately she had not had the gentle guidance from Xavier that she truly needed. It became natural to her to use her telepathy to read other people's minds and thoughts for secrets and knowledge, to psi-blast anyone in her path rendering them unconscious, to form psi-weapons in battle or even possess someone's body, mindwiping their memories and basically being able to control any aspect of a person. She wasn't about to be controlled again. Emma was eventually disowned by her family, and she wasn't too upset when shortly after that they died. This didn't matter to her, she was out on the streets now but she was free. Living on the streets soon disappeared as she tried to hone her mind powers by "forging" her way into exclusive events and stealing appropriate attire. Her third such event was what finalized her wealthy background. (As seen in GenX #24) In this event she listened into the crowd's thoughts on the stock market and used their knowledge to propel Frost Enterprises into a wealthy market. It was also at this party that she first met Harry Leland of the Hellfire club, the Dark Beast and Banshee (all in one night). After being attacked by a group of men outside the party, Banshee (an NYPD member at this time) chased her down in attempts to rescue her from her attackers. The Dark Beast came to her rescue but Banshee thought she was captured by the confused Beast. When Banshee's partner and Leland came in, she mindwiped them all to forget what had happened. Emma became bitter and determined to succeed through all her struggles. The new found success of Frost Enterprises was soon brought to the attention of the wealthy Hellfire club. Her parents were members but when they discovered her mutant abilities, the main members group known as the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club, who were all mutants themselves recruited her. The main members were all named after chess pieces and she was there dubbed as the "White Queen" of the Inner Circle. Their goal was to overcome the people with their riches and powers and they wanted to recruit more mutants for the task, White Queen was now in charge of the recruiting and here was also where the team known as her "Hellions" was formed.

The Hellions stayed at the Massachusetts Academy to hone their powers and gain an education. Regular wealthy humans also attended this school and were the perfect cover up for her schemes. Her hellions were a teenage group of mutants who were in most ways the opposite of the New Mutants. The New Mutants were Xavier's group of mutants that believed in the dream that mutants and humans could live in peace while the White Queen and the hellions fought to be rulars in the world of hate. They became hardened and arrogant as they faced many foes yet even though she was strict, she did care for them and wanted them to have a better life than she did. Although she now had a team of youth in her charge, she was still carrying out her plans and had often gone against and been stopped by the X-Men. It wasn't until she suffered a great loss that she began to see how wrong she was on her view of the world. Fitzroy, a former member of the Hellfire Club, teleported in and they were attacked by the Sentinels that he was leading. Emma was injured in the attack and fell into a coma, but her Hellions weren't as fortunate. Fitzroy and the Sentinels fought off the leaders but the Hellions were no match. Fitzroy and his Sentinels killed the young members of the Hellions that were under the White Queen's watch and she will never let herself forget that for as long as she lives.

It was only after she awoke and took possession over Iceman's body while in her confused state, did she learn of the fate of the Hellions. (Uncanny X-Men # 314) She was confused after she awoke and desperately needed to find her students, her state of mind deteriorated. She finally gained access to the information in the computers and learned the fate of her precious Hellions. At this point she lost control, she attacked her own guards and told them to shoot her to put her out of her misery. Banshee and Xavier managed to get her back to her own body and she began thinking of the way her life was turning. She believed she failed her Hellions and didn't teach them enough, didn't care enough. She began to see the error in her ways. It was then that the entities known as the Phalanx swept through the mansion and attempted to capture the next Generation of mutants (Gen X). She wasn't about to fail anyone again and joined up with Banshee to find and protect these mutants. As they fought off the Phalanx and protected the young mutants, once again everything blew up in Emma's face. During the attack of the Phalanx, Clarice Furguson (AKA Blink) sacrificed herself to save the others from certain death. Once again, the White Queen stood by as another young mutant perished in the human/mutant struggles. Emma was overwhelmed. She didn't want to fail anyone else, she wanted to help the mutants protect themselves and live the decent life that she hadn't. She decided then that she would re-open the Academy to help the next Generation of mutants and Generation X was formed from the ashes.

Emma still is a strict and sometimes mean spirited person. She tries too hard to keep her students from making mistakes and heading down the wrong path. Her ideas are in the right direction but she still needs to realize that they need to make mistakes sometimes in order to learn. She did not have a sense of the right or proper ways to use her powers, she used them to protect herself anyway she could and she still does. Banshee often attempts to make her see how she is acting and tries to calm her anger. Sometimes she can see her errors but often she won't admit she is wrong. Emma has lived too long by using her powers for protection and gain that she hates to show any weakness. Perhaps her tough appearance is to hide her insecurities inside, perhaps not, but everyday is a new battle to the White Queen to understand her directions in life. The White Queen is confused and doesn't quite know which way to turn. She has no one in her life to turn to and even if she did, her hardships would keep her from getting too close, perhaps afraid to be hurt or betrayed again. She couldn't trust her parents, who can she trust? With her leading her new students, perhaps she will one-day find peace, she truly cares for her students and wants to see their goals realized. She won't forget her rocky past and still carries the name of "White Queen" even though the Hellfire Club disbanded. She will one day realize her potential but she won't forget the choices she made in her life that got her to where she is today. She is dedicated to her students and will make sure that they grow up right and will not be forgotten like she was.
